May 7th, 2008 promises to be an exciting day at the University of Washington Bothell/Cascadia Community College. The Community Partnerships Fair will showcase the efforts of students, faculty and staff in the area of service learning, as well as provide our collocated institutions with an opportunity to honor the commitment of our partners in the community. We are planning a multi-modal and multi-media event involving poster sessions, films, performances, wiki demonstrations, storytelling workshops and panel discussions. There will be food, music, and a recognition ceremony for our community partners at 6:00 pm featuring Dr. Bill Christopher, President of Cascadia Community College, and Dr. Kenyon Chan, Chancellor of the University of Washington Bothell.
We still need posters for the poster gallery, any photos of service work you might have for a slideshow, and volunteers for the day of the fair. Contact Bethany Such (bsuch@cascadia.edu) or Michelle Cruver (mcruver@uwb.edu) if you want to help out. |

Service-learning/volunteer opportunity: Space Huskies
Space Huskies is a University of Washington Bothell project now in its fourth year. It provides hands-on learning experiences for fifth and sixth graders based on a joint NASA and National Endowment for the Arts curriculum. UW Bothell students serve as team leaders for groups of elementary school students in weekly classroom sessions, creating imaginative elements of a Mars community, based on real science. The program teaches writing, researching, problem solving, communication, and teamwork. The culminating moment occurs each spring when projects are unveiled for family, friends, and a NASA astronaut at an annual science fair. We are looking for team leaders who can meet with students at Woodin Elementary School (just a couple of miles from campus—and we’ll car pool) on Fridays from 12:45-2:45 PM from April 18 through June 6. The Community Science Fair will be on Wed., June 11, from 6 to 8 PM. UW Bothell students participating will need to provide an additional 1-2 hours/week for preparation and may choose to receive course credit or use it as a project for a course with a service-learning option. For more information, contact Becky Rosenberg (brosenberg@uwb.edu or 425-352-5378).

We started a donation drive or an "everything drive" for Tent City 4 located in downtown Kirkland. "We" being my human relations class and a Socialogy class at Cascadia. Our goal is to begin this drive for the Winter quarter in hopes that we can continue with it into Spring quarter and on. These residents of tent city are great people with real carisma and humor and are very appreciative to what we're doing with the drive and much more. If you'd like to learn more about tent city, ask me or Denise Michaels or Bethany Such (all on this site) and we can fill you in! In the mean time please bring some of these basic essentials to school to help us donate to Tent City. Thank you all so much for your generousity.
