Welcome to the first edition of Community Partnership News, a collaborative effort of the Service Learning Office at Cascadia Community College and the Teaching and Learning Center at the University of Washington Bothell. Our collocated institutions sustain a vibrant and diverse group of students, faculty, and staff engaged in a multitude of community service projects. In fact, so much is going on that we have decided to publish this monthly newsletter as a way to keep everyone informed and to make all of this hard-but-exciting work more visible.

Community Partnership News - 18000 Campus WayFor the past couple of quarters the UW Bothell and Cascadia Community College have been hosting a series of conversations about service learning. These sessions give participants an opportunity to share about and to reflect on their service and to place their work in an educational context. Many guests have come to talk about their community service projects, including faculty like David Ortiz (CCC) and Elizabeth Thomas (UWB). We have also heard about needs and working relationships from community partners like Hopelink and Big Brother, Big Sister. These discussions have been meaningful and substantive, well attended, and have provided inspiration and support for all of us engaged in community-based learning on this campus. Thanks to all of the folks who contributed to both Fall Quarter and to the first Winter Quarter series. Please join us for the second Winter Quarter series March 4th and 5th featuring special guests Ron Krabill and Kari Lerum (UWB). See our events calendar for more details.

English Language Learning
at Juanita High School

Community Partnership News - 18000 Campus WayThe Retention Project is in full swing this quarter! Students at both Cascadia Community College and the UW Bothell are mentoring and tutoring in the local high schools. One of the busiest places right now is the ELL class at Juanita High. These culturally diverse high school students have are from countries like Cambodia, Thailand, Mexico, Romania, China, Ukraine and many others. They are learning English for the first time. "The impact our students are making at Juanita is incredible," says Cascadia student/Juanita graduate Kathy Po. Having actual college students in the classroom makes college less of an abstract idea and more of a realistic choice. Currently there are four college students from Cascadia and the UWB that serve Juanita's ELL class. To find out more information about becoming a mentor, contact Bethany Such, AmeriCorps Retention Project Coordinator.

Tent City 4 on the Move

Community Partnership News - 18000 Campus Way
with a little help from Cascadia Community College

On February 9th, Tent City 4 moved to its new home at Kirkland Congregational Church. Twelve students and two faculty members from Cascadia Community College arrived at 7:00 am and began cleaning and helping to take down tents. Soon after, everything was loaded into trucks and transported to the new location. One of the volunteers, Trisha Howell, was inspired by the experience and decided to start a Tent City Drive. The donation boxes, located in Cascadia Building 1 on the first floor, are accepting batteries, gloves, garbage bags, glow sticks, flashlights, canned meals/food, coffee accessories, paper products, thermal socks and underwear, clothing, razors, bottled water and juice, and board games. Contact Trisha for more information about the drive and for opportunities to get involved.

Community-based Learning
at the University of Washington Bothell

Community Partnership News - 18000 Campus WayThe benefits of community-based learning are well documented: collaboration among students, faculty and community provide high-quality educational experiences that apply classroom learning to genuine problems in real-world contexts and contribute meaningfully to sustainable regional development. Departments at the UW Bothell offer courses with potential community service components each quarter. This spring, relationships between local agencies and coursework in the Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences program are being facilitated by our new Community Partnership Coordinator, Michelle Cruver. Michelle is working on courses with local partners for Spring Quarter including: The Politics of Sex Education and Sociology of Sexuality, with Kari Lerum; Social Problems, with Jonathan Wender; The Seattle Region, with Sara Starkweather; Exploring American Culture: Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration, with David Goldstein and Disability and Human Rights with Kanta Kochhar-Lindgren. Check out these and other courses, as well as service learning opportunities from Nursing, Education, Environmental Science, and CUSP, and find out how to get involved with a community partner on our website.

Many are recognizing the great work being done at Jubilee Reach Center by one of Cascadia's very own: Chris Singson is making noise this quarter as part of his Sociology of Families service learning class. He is using his passion for music, instructing kids at the center to play drums. His class size varies from one to six 6- to 16-year-olds every week. "The kids are all very motivated and dedicated to learning what I teach them . . . that inspires me." Congratulations to Chris for his great work, and his contribution to our community!
