SL Workshop PreparationsThis is a featured page

Introduction

  • Make it clear that questions are encouraged (Misty will try to capture questions on the wiki as we go, and archive more complicated ones for later)
  • participants say who they are and what their experience with Service Learning is.

Definition

  • Service-learning combines service objectives with learning objectives with the intent that the activity changes both the recipient and the provider of the service. This is accomplished by combining service tasks with structured opportunities that link the task to self-reflection, self-discovery, and the acquisition and comprehension of values, skills, and knowledge content.
  • Denise will give a brief synopsis that creates a framework

Current Projects

  • Denise will talk about Learn and Serve
  • Bethany will talk about the Retention Project using the example of Juanita

Faculty Perspective

  • Denise (or perhaps Lindsay) can offer their perspective about why Service Learning was an important element for them to incorporate into their classes

Student Voices

Here we imagine a panel of student (maybe just Chris Singson and Misty Wheeler, maybe a couple more) who are willing to offer their perspective on service learning. These will be students who have completed, or are currently taking service learning classes who can offer feedback on some questions we think are important (in addition to those our participants might ask) including these:

    1. What is the biggest impact that Service Learning has had on you?
    2. How are Service Learning courses different from other courses you've taken?
    3. What are we learning in class?
    4. How does the wiki technology support our learning, and how might it be better utilized?
    5. What are some examples of how what you're learning at your service site connects to course content

Faculty Story

A faculty member will tell a story of how they incorporated service learning into their course

    • important to front load expectations for students
    • working with service learning office and partners

Brainstorming in Groups

Faculty can imagine what kind of service learning they would like to do and what questions that brings up, also, what kind of support they need.

  • We will break into pairs or groups of 5 (depending on the number of participants) for 15+ minutes
  • Brainstorm ideas with your group for course themes/projects
  • Once you have an idea jot down the support you will need

Report Out

After working in groups, participants will write on the board
(we will get this up on the wiki for folks to keep going).

  • the discipline they teach
  • a project idea and course theme
  • further necessary support
  • one thing they learned
