Space Huskies for Spring!
Mar 17 2008, 1:09 PM EDT Service-learning/volunteer opportunity: Space Huskies Space Huskies is a University of Washington Bothell project now in its fourth year. It provides hands-on learning experiences for fifth and sixth graders based on a joint NASA and National Endowment for the Arts curriculum. UW Bothell students serve as team leaders for groups of elementary school students in weekly classroom sessions, creating imaginative elements of a Mars community, based on real science. The program teaches writing, researching, problem solving, communication, and teamwork. The culminating moment occurs each spring when projects are unveiled for family, friends, and a NASA astronaut at an annual science fair. We are looking for team leaders who can meet with students at Woodin Elementary School (just a couple of miles from campus—and we’ll car pool) on Fridays from 12:45-2:45 PM from April 18 through June 6. The Community Science Fair will be on Wed., June 11, from 6 to 8 PM. UW Bothell students participating will need to provide an additional 1-2 hours/week for preparation and may choose to receive course credit or use it as a project for a course with a service-learning option. For more information, contact Becky Rosenberg (brosenberg@uwb.edu or 425-352-5378). Do you find this valuable? |
