Meetings
Apr 28 2008, 2:59 PM EDT
Starting 4-28-08 meetings will be held every other Monday on the third floor breakout area in front of the science labs. Discussions will include current science topics of the groups choosing. As well as decisions about how CHSC should be run, and what we should do with our club. Do you find this valuable?

My thoughts on the purpose and objectives of the health and science cl

I interpret the idea of a science club as a place to collaboratively take scientific concepts, from in and out of class, and relate them to some worldly applications.

I believe that it’s important to emphasize the applications of the concepts we study in an interactive environment. By this I mean to keep a steady stream of substantial goals and projects. This will make for a much more tangible experience and a more attractive organization.

To attract a wide range of diverse members is an essential objective to ensure a substantial agenda and an overall enlightened perspective. One-way we may maintain a captivating setting is to incorporate games and competitions into some of our projects.

This being said I would like to postpone introducing my first Idea and now suggest a second topic that could have the potential to be made in to some sort of contest.

In studying some physical laws (such as gravity, pressure, force and what not) and some chemical principals, we could create an interesting “unit” on projectiles. A contest may be arranged in such a way that the objective would be to launch a projectile (such as a golf ball) over a barrier and make it land as close as possible to a given target (such as a hole). Proportions could also be made to fit in a lab setting.

My first and final suggestion is to touch on the topic of piezoelectric crystals (or ceramics). I have done some research on this subject and I’m intending on sharing what I have learned with the group on Monday. Though I doubt we have the resources to pursue a project involving piezoelectricity, I personally find some of the applications fascinating and worth taking a look at.

If you have anything to say don’t hesitate.
I’m hoping someone responds to this before Monday.
If not I’ll all talk to you all on 5/12.
